To Read Or Not To Read: New In! – I

Being the avid reader that I am, I love buying books, and series of books in particular. Wait… Make that series with awesome cover art. I know, I know, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but damn… I just can’t resist beautiful covers! And it’s even more awesome when you find a beautiful edition of something that you’ve wanted to read for ages :) So a while ago, I decided to finally get these:

Pretties!

But wait… There’s more:

Ooh! This makes me feel like a kid in a candy store :)

It’s very rare that I read a book because I liked a particular movie adaptation, but this is one of those cases. I’ve watched The Night Watch a lot of times, and I’ve read the first book way back when it came out, but after seeing the movie again not too long ago I decided I really needed to read the books. Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten to the “reading” part yet (my to-read stack is too damn big these days), but I’m totally looking forward to it. However, now that there’s a fifth book in the making I guess I don’t have to rush things… There’s little I can stand less than having to wait for a new book in a series!

Now, for the ones of you wondering about the books… Basically, they’re fantasy/science fiction, but in a crazy Russian way. I don’t read much of either genre at all, but I don’t think there’s anything like this series. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’m not even going to try and explain what in hell they’re about. I’m not even sure if I could! I might give it a shot after I finish reading, but I’m not going to promise anything ;)

So… Have you read the Watch series or seen the movie? What did you think?

Thanks for reading!

A Little Bit Of DIY

I had this post planned for ages, but for some reason things just didn’t work out. Work’s still a bore, my neurons are still suicidal, so nothing new there. However, feeling un-challenged and all has an upside; I’ve decided that I just ought to spend my off-work time by doing things that are fun and relaxing. It’s still a bit hard to get started, but I think I’m finally getting the hang of it :)

I’ve always enjoyed everything creative. Whether it’s writing, drawing, making music, cooking or even pottery, those kind of “projects”, as I like to call them, always get me in a great state of mind. I don’t know, there’s just something about that feeling when you’re totally focusing on “making” something, and don’t even get me started on the euphoria when it’s finally finished! So today, I’d like to share the outcome of one of my latest wannabe-creative outbursts. It all started… With a pair of boots:

Cute… But something’s missing, don’t you think? (Source)

Usually I don’t buy anything I’m not 100% excited about, but I just had this feeling I could do something with these boots and bought them. And in a sudden state of clearmindedness I decided that studs were the answer. Lots and lots of them! I bought a shitload off eBay (which is, next to Google, my best friend these days… Partly because it’s one of the few sites I can access from work, haha), sat down for an evening, and there they were… The boots that I really wanted:

Exit boring, hello rock ‘n roll!

All in all they cost me a few euro’s, a few hours, very painful fingers and despite totally ruining my manicure, I was pleased with my new, unique boots :) Small price, big change. So… What do you think of this transformation?

Since I’m finally doing something interesting (haha), I’ll probably be posting a bit more about my little projects, and whining about work a little less. I guess that’s progress, right? ;) And since I have a brand new camera (courtesy of le man, who’s been trying to get me to write again for quite a while and took away my excuse of having a crappy cam), there’s going to be a lot more pictures too. Yay! But please bear with me while I figure the damn thing out, lol.

I’m kind of looking forward to being back and doing something new here, and I hope you’ll like it as much as I probably will. It is a bit scary though, hence the “kind of” part, but I guess I’ll just have to get over that!

Aaaanyway… Thanks for reading, and I hope you’ve enjoyed.

Holy Mother Of Covers: IV – Hurt

Usually, I really don’t like cover versions of songs that I love, but today’s post is a little different. In fact, I think it’s one of the very few cover versions around that didn’t mess up the song for me but just added another beautiful dimension to it, making the original song even more awesome. Of course, I’m talking about Nine Inch Nails’ song “Hurt”.

I don’t want to ruin anything for anybody here by blabbing too much, so let’s check out Johnny Cash’s version straight away:

Isn’t it amazing? So full of feeling, so deep and beautiful…

Now, the original version, recorded by Nine Inch Nails:

Isn’t it awesome how different both songs are, yet still the same? Both of the versions just “grab” me, and don’t let go until I’m on the verge of tears, if not actually crying. It’s impossible to tell you which one I prefer, because I really can’t say. I love them both.

What do you think of this song? And can you pick a favourite?

Thanks for stopping by!

Holy Mother Of Covers: III – Like A G6

I’m still in my computer-related cleanup mode, and I found more awesomeness! Perfect timing, because it’s been a while since I shared an insanely cool cover version with you all.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you one of the sexiest things I’ve ever heard:

I can rant about how much I love this version for hours, but I won’t. I love the “dark” way it sounds, and Major’s deep voice, and just the way he “simplified” the song. And of course, I love the “old-school” vibe it has to it now.

Now, let’s compare Major’s cover with the original version by Far East Movement:

I have to admit that I never disliked Far East Movement’s original version. In fact, I can honestly say that I like it. The beat is great, and it’s very dance-able, which is very important to me – an enjoyable song either has to have great lyrics, or make me cry, sing or dance.

The original also brings back some fond memories, one of which is when at a party at my former job, one of my old colleagues sincerely stated that she wasn’t drunk, but kept yelling “actin’ like they drunk!” whenever she thought it fit. This lasted for several days after said party, so I guess you can imagine how hilarious it is when you’re working and somebody goes “actin’ like they drunk!” all of a sudden. I believe that was on the last weekend me and le man went on a little trip together, which makes for the rest of the good memories. Damn, I miss those times.

So… Enough ranting. I’m not sure if I can pick a favourite here! Which one do you prefer? And why?

Thanks for reading, hope you’ve enjoyed, and I’m looking forward to your comments!

Guilty Pleasures: Eurovision Song Contest

When I was a little girl, there were two nights a year I could stay up late. One was of course New Year’s Eve, and the other was… Eurovision Song Contest night. And twenty-something years later, it’s still a bit of a mother-daughter thing for me and my mom. Traditionally, we criticize and rate every song, trying to guess who’s going to win this year’s contest. Despite having extremely different musical preferences, we still both manage to guess pretty well.

Here in The Netherlands, the ESC is seen as a “gay thing” mostly and in a way interest in it will be frowned upon. I’m not sure what sexual preferences have anything to do with a music contest, so my best guess is that the Dutch aren’t into the contest any more because they haven’t made the finals in quite a while. I’m just perplexed that they think they even stand a chance, with the absolute crap they send in. Now I do have to admit, there’s a lot of strange entires, like Russia’s this year. But they came in second! And despite not being all too pleased with that, I can understand why that happened. Russia’s entry was funny. Holland’s wasn’t (and it was off-key as f*ck, while we’re at it). They just take themselves too damn seriously, but they don’t even consider sending in any of the actually talented artists we have here. Hell, they might even be better off sending me in! ;)

All in all, I have to say this year’s ESC was pretty okay. I’ve seen quite some things that I did like, and among my personal favourites were Sweden, Serbia and Slovakia. The latter unfortunately didn’t make it into the final, which was to be expected, but I still thought it was very awesome. Sweden won this year, and Serbia took third place, thanks to the grannies from Russia! So I guess now y’all know why I wasn’t too pleased with their coming in second ;) The only thing that really bothered me this year, is the fact that the counting of the votes was boring. Sweden took the first place all the time, there was no doubt she’d win, so the counting part was quite a waste of time.

So, my European readers, have you been watching the ESC this year? Who were your favourites? Of course, the rest of you are free to comment on our silliness too ;)

Holy Mother Of Covers: II – Sexy And I Know It

I’m sorry if I’m overdosing a little on the music-related posts, but I couldn’t not share this cover, because it’s way too awesome. Check it out:

My boyfriend introduced me to this song last Friday. Now I have to admit that at first I was sceptical, I just couldn’t see what could possibly make this kid and his guitar so special. But after listening… Sold! I love love love his voice, and I adore the way he makes the song sound… Well, less silly. I’ve heard some more of his songs and he’s amazingly talented, so if you like this one, you should definitely check out the rest of his covers!

And of course, just for the sake of it, the original, which in fact did make me laugh my ass off (and still does): Small warning – if you’re unfamiliar with this video, and easily offended, I suggest you don’t click the “play” button ;)

What are your thoughts on Noah’s version of the song? Like?

Song Of The Day: Incubus – Under My Umbrella

Discovering new music is a bit of a hobby for me, and a while ago, a friend of mine introduced me to this song:

Now I’ve never been into Incubus, but this song… Wow. I have to admit that at first, the title put me off. It reminded me of… Yep, Rihanna. But after the first listen, I was sold! The music, the voice, the lyrics… THE LYRICS!

When I close my eyes
I can see for miles
There’s comfort in my dark seat,
And chaos in the aisles

These eyes are not your eyes
And these eyes are not the color that
Your arid eyes might be
No, I was not around
When those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see

When I close my eyes
I remember why I smile
Under my umbrella
I’m an accomplished exile

These eyes are not your eyes
And these eyes are not the color that
Your arid eyes might be
No, I was not around
When those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see

If this is right, I’d rather be wrong
If this is sight, I’d rather be blind

These eyes are not your eyes
And these eyes are not the color that
Your arid eyes might be
No, I was not around
When those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see

If this is right, I’d rather be wrong
If this is sight, I’d rather be blind

I usually love songs with good lyrics, and these are… Well, maybe a little weird, but I love them. The first line -or actually the first two- are genius. So genius in fact, that my friend’s probably get them tattooed! But mostly, they got me thinking. And I love it when songs/books/people get me thinking!

Pfff… I could babble about this song for ages, but I really ought to get ready for the interview. Luckily I’ve found my huge umbrella (in case you were wondering why I picked this song today, blame the umbrella!) so maybe the rain won’t give me that lovely “drowned kitten” look. Yay.

Hope you’ve enjoyed the song, and feel free to share your thoughts/other songs/anything!

Love,
