To Read Or Not To Read: New In! – I

Being the avid reader that I am, I love buying books, and series of books in particular. Wait… Make that series with awesome cover art. I know, I know, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but damn… I just can’t resist beautiful covers! And it’s even more awesome when you find a beautiful edition of something that you’ve wanted to read for ages :) So a while ago, I decided to finally get these:

Pretties!

But wait… There’s more:

Ooh! This makes me feel like a kid in a candy store :)

It’s very rare that I read a book because I liked a particular movie adaptation, but this is one of those cases. I’ve watched The Night Watch a lot of times, and I’ve read the first book way back when it came out, but after seeing the movie again not too long ago I decided I really needed to read the books. Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten to the “reading” part yet (my to-read stack is too damn big these days), but I’m totally looking forward to it. However, now that there’s a fifth book in the making I guess I don’t have to rush things… There’s little I can stand less than having to wait for a new book in a series!

Now, for the ones of you wondering about the books… Basically, they’re fantasy/science fiction, but in a crazy Russian way. I don’t read much of either genre at all, but I don’t think there’s anything like this series. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’m not even going to try and explain what in hell they’re about. I’m not even sure if I could! I might give it a shot after I finish reading, but I’m not going to promise anything ;)

So… Have you read the Watch series or seen the movie? What did you think?

Thanks for reading!

A Little Bit Of DIY

I had this post planned for ages, but for some reason things just didn’t work out. Work’s still a bore, my neurons are still suicidal, so nothing new there. However, feeling un-challenged and all has an upside; I’ve decided that I just ought to spend my off-work time by doing things that are fun and relaxing. It’s still a bit hard to get started, but I think I’m finally getting the hang of it :)

I’ve always enjoyed everything creative. Whether it’s writing, drawing, making music, cooking or even pottery, those kind of “projects”, as I like to call them, always get me in a great state of mind. I don’t know, there’s just something about that feeling when you’re totally focusing on “making” something, and don’t even get me started on the euphoria when it’s finally finished! So today, I’d like to share the outcome of one of my latest wannabe-creative outbursts. It all started… With a pair of boots:

Cute… But something’s missing, don’t you think? (Source)

Usually I don’t buy anything I’m not 100% excited about, but I just had this feeling I could do something with these boots and bought them. And in a sudden state of clearmindedness I decided that studs were the answer. Lots and lots of them! I bought a shitload off eBay (which is, next to Google, my best friend these days… Partly because it’s one of the few sites I can access from work, haha), sat down for an evening, and there they were… The boots that I really wanted:

Exit boring, hello rock ‘n roll!

All in all they cost me a few euro’s, a few hours, very painful fingers and despite totally ruining my manicure, I was pleased with my new, unique boots :) Small price, big change. So… What do you think of this transformation?

Since I’m finally doing something interesting (haha), I’ll probably be posting a bit more about my little projects, and whining about work a little less. I guess that’s progress, right? ;) And since I have a brand new camera (courtesy of le man, who’s been trying to get me to write again for quite a while and took away my excuse of having a crappy cam), there’s going to be a lot more pictures too. Yay! But please bear with me while I figure the damn thing out, lol.

I’m kind of looking forward to being back and doing something new here, and I hope you’ll like it as much as I probably will. It is a bit scary though, hence the “kind of” part, but I guess I’ll just have to get over that!

Aaaanyway… Thanks for reading, and I hope you’ve enjoyed.

Us 2.0

Today is kind of a special day… It’s my (and le man’s, of course) 2 year anniversary :) At least, kind of. Two years ago we decided to make things official, after two weeks of utter confusion (you can find a summary on how it all started here).

And what two years it have been! Ups, downs, some more downs, and then some more ups. Despite all the things that have gone wrong, I can’t imagine a better place I’d like to be. For the rest of my life, if I have anything to say about it! So I guess it’s safe to say the ups eliminate the downs ;)

There’s many a song that could describe how I feel right now, but I’ll stay with a classic today:

Don’t you just wish somebody wrote a song like that for you? I sure as hell do!

I’m curious… Do you have somebody in your life who makes you complete, and makes you a better person just by being part of your life?

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!

To Read Or Not To Read: The Twilight Saga

I know, I know, I’ve used a similar title for this post, but I figured “to read or not to read” would be a nice generic term for my reading-related posts. So far there haven’t been all that many, but I’ve got a few ideas so might as well categorize them, ML-X style :) It made total sense when I thought of it; if I don’t read, I don’t think I “am”.

Aaanyway… In the aforementioned post, way back when I started this blog, I was really wondering whether to start reading Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga or not. It’s been quite a dilemma, but with a little help from you guys in the comments, I decided to give it a go and bought these beauties:

In the wrong order, lol.

And then some of the cover artwork:

I love these covers!

I actually wanted to go for the special edition, but decided not to because they were quite a bit pricier, and wouldn’t look all that awesome between my other books due to the colour difference. I know, my reasoning doesn’t make all that much sense, but just trust me on this one.

Bloody beautiful!

Either way, the “regular” black edition is gorgeous as well, and I’m happy I could find a set so they all match!

As you may or may not have noticed in the first picture, I’ve already started reading the first book. And… I love it. It’s such an adorable love story and I’m having such a hard time with putting it down, that even now while I’m writing, I want to finish off as soon as I can to go back to reading it. And just knowing that with every sequel the book is getting bigger makes me kind of happy inside!

The only downpart I can think of (of the first book) is that it’s quite similar to the movie. So there’s only very little room for surprise. But in all honesty, I can’t believe I still remember so much from the movie, what with my Alzheimer-ish memory and seeing the movie months ago! But it’s not all that disturbing; in fact I’m almost done with Twilight and I guess I’ll be moving on to New Moon very soon. I can hardly wait!

I owe a big thank-you to the ones who’ve convinced me to read it despite my scepticism, both on- and offline. You know who you are :)

Anyway, that’s all for today, I’m headed back to my book ;) But I’m curious; which books have you been reading lately? Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks for reading, commenting and just sticking around!

Holy Mother Of Covers: III – Like A G6

I’m still in my computer-related cleanup mode, and I found more awesomeness! Perfect timing, because it’s been a while since I shared an insanely cool cover version with you all.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you one of the sexiest things I’ve ever heard:

I can rant about how much I love this version for hours, but I won’t. I love the “dark” way it sounds, and Major’s deep voice, and just the way he “simplified” the song. And of course, I love the “old-school” vibe it has to it now.

Now, let’s compare Major’s cover with the original version by Far East Movement:

I have to admit that I never disliked Far East Movement’s original version. In fact, I can honestly say that I like it. The beat is great, and it’s very dance-able, which is very important to me – an enjoyable song either has to have great lyrics, or make me cry, sing or dance.

The original also brings back some fond memories, one of which is when at a party at my former job, one of my old colleagues sincerely stated that she wasn’t drunk, but kept yelling “actin’ like they drunk!” whenever she thought it fit. This lasted for several days after said party, so I guess you can imagine how hilarious it is when you’re working and somebody goes “actin’ like they drunk!” all of a sudden. I believe that was on the last weekend me and le man went on a little trip together, which makes for the rest of the good memories. Damn, I miss those times.

So… Enough ranting. I’m not sure if I can pick a favourite here! Which one do you prefer? And why?

Thanks for reading, hope you’ve enjoyed, and I’m looking forward to your comments!

Some Sane Advice

My computer desktop was in desperate need of some cleaning up (I always manage to make a huge shitmess of it), and at a certain point I came across this picture that I saved a while ago:

Best biblical advice ever! (source)

Despite being non-religious, I totally loved this. Not only did I find it hilarious -else I wouldn’t have saved it-, but I thought it’s some really great advice. I see too many girls ending up with all those other az-es :) And god knows I’ve had my share of them as well.

I apologize for the super short post, and I hope you’ve enjoyed it nevertheless. I’ve planned on writing up some more stuff tomorrow, so I think I’ll be back on the writing wagon soon enough. But for now, I’m off to enjoy some sunshine :)

Have a great day, and until next time.

Football/Soccer: UEFA EURO 2012

After having to wait for almost two years (or four, depends on how you look at it), it’s hardcore football time again. The European Championships have finally started!

Let the games begin!

I am quite the football fan, and whilst having followed the earlier mentioned Eredivisie, the prospect of the EURO’s got me even more excited. I’ve watched them (and the World Championships) ever since I was a little girl, but 2010’s World Championships were extra special; they’re the reason me and le man are an item.

I still remember what happened; we were out in town with the company, watching The Netherlands play against Brazil on the biggest TV I’d ever seen. It was hot outside, and I couldn’t see anything because of all the people so I was standing on some kind of ledge and he was standing in front of me so I didn’t fall off. The funny thing is that despite thinking he was cute, we’d never talked all that much. Hell, I even hated his butt when he first came to work for us, because I figured he’d steal my job (long story). But he didn’t, and gradually we’d started exchanging words every once in a while.

Anyway, back to the point. As I said, it was scorching hot out there and I had my beer-cooled hand on his neck to cool him off, the game was great and against all odds… We won! Holy shit, we won from Brazil! Everybody was extatic, yelling and hugging random strangers and we… We just kissed. And that’s how everything started.

Obviously, football has been extra special after that, for the both of us. Some might find it boring, but we watch games together whenever we can and want. And when we can’t watch together, we watch seperately and text about it. It’s also our little inside joke; the other day there was a show on TV where the participants had to answer, “What’s the best place to fall in love?”, and he simply said “During a football match”. Of course, that wasn’t the right answer, but I loved it!

We’ve watched the first two games together (Poland vs Greece and Russia vs Czech Republic, although I missed the last bit of the second one), but unfortunately couldn’t watch The Netherlands against Danmark (which the idiots lost!) and Germany vs Portugal together because he had to work. Tonight we’re both off and the third pair of games will be played. There may be war; I’m an Italy fan (my current hair colour is red with black, like AC Milan!), while he’s more into Spanish football, and that’s the first game scheduled for tonight.

I do hope The Netherlands will pick up their pace after yesterday’s game, because it would be a shame if they wouldn’t go to the quarter finals. The atmosphere here back in 2010 when they did so well was simply undescribable. Yep, football beats the shit out of Queensday! And for the last few weeks, there’s been orange everywhere, and supermarket and drugstore chains have dealt out all kinds of football-related goodies with every x-amount spent. Yeah, it’s great to be here when the football craze is on!

So to all of you watching the EURO’s I’d like to say: Enjoy, and may the best country win! And to you who might want to start watching but don’t know how to; check Fiction In Crazy Mode’s post here on how to enjoy these games at their fullest.

Until next time!

The Story Behind The Pic

A month or so ago, I got really bored with the standard Gravatar I had, so I figured I’d upload an actual picture of me there. The problem was that had to be unrecognizable, since I’ve been doing this sort of “anonymously”, but I have a strong dislike of having my picture taken too. More on that another time, I guess.

Anyway, I decided to go through some old pictures, and came across this little gem, which I decided was perfect:

Hi there! Don’t ya think I’m pretty?

This is me, or actually, this was me in November 2007, but not that much has changed since then. You’ll probably be wondering what in hell is wrong with me, so I’ll share the story today.

I’ve always had a thing for unusual hair colours. Back when this picture was taken, it was La Riche Directions’ Flamingo Pink, if I remember correctly. Now any one of you who is familiar with Direction hair dyes knows how those (gorgeous!) colours stain like crazy. I had a purple once, Plum or Violet, and it stained my parents’ bathroom and my face. Not a good look, by the way. Thank god for eye make up remover!

I like to think of myself as a creative person, so what I did there is a little Creativity And Duct Tape 101. And let me tell you… That was the worst idea I ever had. Not only was the Duct Tape rendering my fingers completely immobile and thus making the dyeing process impossible, taking it off again was… Well, I think “hell” might be a good word. Luckily, I hadn’t gotten it wet yet so I still have all of my fingers today ;)

I don’t think I ever introduced myself porperly, so I hope this helped. This is me. Quirky, crazy, a tad stupid at times.

I feel I’ve “met” some great people here, so I’d like to grasp the opportunity here and say to all of you: thank you for enriching my life in all kinds of ways.

What Goes Up…

…Must come down. And it did. Not too long after my previous post, everything simply collapsed. I went over to my folks’ to help out with the painting, and le man came over to lend a hand too. Everything was perfectly fine, up until the part when he got horrendously ill out of the blue. It was awful. I saw the strong man that I’ve known for so long now turn into… A mess of nothingness. And I couldn’t do anything about it.

My parents figured it might have something to do with the fumes of the paint or the cleaning solution we’d used the day before (it had gotten me sick the last time as well) so I made him some chamomile tea, and just sat with him. He could hardly keep his eyes open, and I couldn’t handle it. I hated myself for not being able to make him better, and I was scared. So scared that when he finally managed to fall asleep, I checked up on him every five minutes to see if he was still breathing. Just in case.

The time I didn’t spend with him, I didn’t spend helping out my parents either, making me feel even more useless than I already did. Especially when my mom decided to help out instead of me; she’s got some health issues of her own, but she’s insanely stubborn and simply refused to get off the ladder and give me my paintbrush back.

After le man woke up I tried to feed him a little but he threw up the bit of cucumber he managed to shove down his throat almost immediately. So we “hung out” in the bathroom, and seeing him hugging the toilet with one hand and holding mine with his other just broke my heart. For fuck’s sake, why couldn’t I fix this?! I know, I might be a little irrational but I just wanted to make everything OK again. But I couldn’t, so I just had to wait until it fixed itself. And it did, a little at least. An hour or so after our “toilet date”, he finally started to feel somewhat better, and I silently thanked “the powers that be”.

During the day that followed he was getting better little by little, and yesterday he was feeling good enough to go back home. The paint job at my parents’ turned out great, it’s a light, minty green now and I kinda wish I’d thought of it when I was moving in here, because the sensitivity of my white walls is driving me insane! But I’ll manage; cleaning a wall isn’t nearly as awful as the  last two days have been.

One of the worst side effects from this episode is the fact that it got me thinking… I couldn’t handle not being able to help, so what if I have children later on in life and they get sick? And I’m not talking about heavy stuff like this, it’s just that I’m pretty sure I couldn’t handle my child(ren) having a freakin’ cold and me being unable to help them. It’s gotten me to doubt my abilities as a mother, and that’s hard for me. But maybe I just wasn’t meant to be one.

I apologize for the long rant, I just really needed to get it out of my system for a while. Thank you for reading, and until next time.

Just Making The Most Of It

You might have noticed that my posts have been a little sparse lately, but I’ve been a little busy. With what? Well… Just making the most of life as it is right now. I’m currently in a flow of just doing things I enjoy, and I’m enjoying them even more than usual :)

I’ve spent almost three days having a great time with le man, and this weekend I’m helping my folks out at my old home because they’ve been redecorating a little. So I’ve been “Bob Ross-ing” some walls and getting downright dirty, and I love it. I’ve always had a fondness  for home improvement, and now I also feel like I can give something back to mom and especially dad, because they’ve helped me out so much when I bought my apartment.

Despite almost being officially without a job (two more days to go now!) and stressing out finance-wise, I’ve been… Extremely happy. And that’s very rare for me. I’m going to end this post with a moral: Enjoy life as it is, and appreciate the small things. No matter what you may lose someday, if you can get a smile on your face from the small things, you’ll never lose your happiness.

Thank you all for reading.
