Blast From The Past: Mortal Kombat

Way back when I was a little girl, somewhere around 8 years old if memory serves me well, I really used to look forward to the summer holidays. We’d always spend five weeks at my uncle’s, where I had two cousins who were pretty much the same age as me and my brother. Those weeks there were the only time I would see them, but they were amazing. Way back then, kids still used to play outside, and so did we. Thinking back, we were quite the troublemakers! But it was all good, especially considering how kids behave these days.

If we weren’t outside, we’d spend hours playing on the SEGA Mega Drive (a.k.a. Genesis). We’ve played a lot of different games, but Mortal Kombat II and III were our favourites. Quite violent for a couple of 6-to-9-year-olds, but we loved the hell out of them. Everybody had a favourite character, and we even used to “fight” in real life, pretending we were these characters. Those were some really, really good times.

Fast forward to now; a lot of things have changed, and I haven’t seen my cousins in years. But I still have a great fondness of those games. And thanks to my best friend, I had a little “blast from the past”; he’s loaned me his XBOX, together with a copy of “Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe”. And for a while I was an 8-year-old again, playing with Kitana and basically just pushing random buttons until my fingers hurt and the opponent was killed. And oh, the fatalities! And babalities! And even friendships! Back when I was a kid, we lived for those, practicing and practicing until we finally got them right. They were the ultimate awesomeness.

Now of course Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe isn’t the real deal; not even close. Even the fatalities (which are “googlable” these days, yay!) aren’t as icky and awesome as they used to be, despite the huge improvement of the graphics. And don’t even get me started on my dislike of the DC Universe characters (which I just ignore or beat up ;)) and their stupid “Heroic Brutality” thing! But all in all, it’s still able to get me to a good place, a carefree place, which is exactly what I need right now.

Have you ever played any of the Mortal Kombat games? Or were you more a Tekken kind of person? What’s your favourite character?

Thanks for reading!

Love,

ML-X
